Last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, held in Newark, Jersey, and hosted by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, was nothing short of explosive performances and powerful political statements!

Missy Elliott received the Video Vanguard, the highest award of the night, just after she blessed us with a typical Missy-style performance that made all of us want to “Get Your Freak On” and head back to the ’90s.

Lizzo’s performance was “Good As Hell” as she continues to prove that she’s 100% that….well, you know the rest! The “Truth Hurts” singer gave us Sir Mix-A-Lot and “Baby Got Back” vibes with a twerk-a-thon that transpired right in front of a larger-than-life inflatable butt. If that’s not poetry in motion, we don’t know what is.

Miley Cyrus hit the stage for the first time since her break up with Liam Hemsworth with an emotional performance of her new single, “Slide Away.”

In addition to snagging Video of the Year and the VMAs’ first-ever Video for Good award, Taylor Swift rallied the LGBTQ community with a colorful performance of “You Need To Calm Down.” With Todrick Hall by her side, she seemingly dissed Trump and encouraged equality.

Normani made her solo VMAs performance debut for the first time, gracing the stage with her gone-viral hit “Motivation”—equipped with flawless choreography that has the internet buzzin’. She also took home the R&B Video award.

Lil Nas X got off “Old Town Road” for a bit to perform “Panini,“ and he also won his first-ever VMA for Song of the Year.

Last but not least, the Jonas Brothers made an epic comeback by winning Best Pop Video for “Sucker” and performing on the VMA stage for the first time in 11 years.
