LIZZO, JOHN LEGEND, POST MALONE & MORE HAVE THE BEST MOMENTS OF THE 2020 BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS
Thursday, Oct 15, 2020
HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA – OCTOBER 14: In this image released on October 14, Lizzo accepts the Top Song Sales Artist Award onstage at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, broadcast on October 14, 2020 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. (Photo by Kevin Winter/BBMA2020/Getty Images for dcp)

The 2020 Billboard Music Awards were in full swing last night! Kelly Clarkson, the host for the third year, kicked off the show with a powerful cover of Whitney Houston’s “Higher Love”, setting the tone for an unbelievable night of music. Heading into the BBMA’s with 16 nods, Post Malone snagged 9 of them including Artist of the Year. Khalid came in second with five wins, and Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus trailed with 4 awards each. But in addition to those wins, some of the night’s most powerful moments included political statements, emotional tributes, some musical theater, and a little bit of nostalgia.

While accepting the award for top song sales artist, Lizzo used her platform to speak out against voter suppression and the importance of making your voice heard.

“Let me tell y’all something. When people try to suppress something it’s normally because that thing holds power. They’re afraid of your power,” Lizzo said. “There’s power in who you are. There’s power in your voice. So whether it’s through music or protest or your right to vote, use your power, use your voice, and refuse to be suppressed.”

Just a couple of weeks after losing their unborn child, John Legend delivered an emotional tribute to his wife Chrissy Teigen while performing a solo of “Never Break”.

Doja Cat served up musical theater in a classic Burlesque-style performance of “Juicy”, “Say So”, and “Like That”.

Garth Brooks, who was awarded this year’s 2020 Icon Award, took us down memory lane with a classic performance of Friends In Low Places, while ’90s R&B group EnVogue closed out the show with their iconic hit “Free Your Mind”.
