LEGENDARY ‘LEAN ON ME’ SOUL SINGER, BILL WITHERS, DIES AT 81
Friday, Apr 3, 2020

Grammy Award-winning soul singer, Bill Withers, has died at the age 81 due to heart complications. The legendary singer and songwriter was best known for his timeless hits like Lovely Day, Ain’t No Sunshine, Grandma’s Hands, Just The Two Of Us and many more. His family released the below statement regarding the singer’s passing.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father,” his family said. “A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other. As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”

A native West Virginian, small town Bill Withers joined the Navy at 18 years old. However, after serving nine years, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his passion for music. Bill was soon discovered by Clarence “The Black Godfather” Avant, and even made an appearance in the 2019 Netflix Series The Black Godfather.

Bill released his first classic album Just As I Am in 1971, which included monster hits such as “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and “Grandma’s Hands.” He would go on to release seven more studio albums that produced classic songs like Use Me (1972), Lovely Day (1977), Just The Two Of Us (1981), and Lean On Me (1971), which inspired the 1989 film starring Morgan Freeman.

We’re sending our thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and fans of Bill Withers. May his timeless music and legacy live on in the hearts of all. Below are some of his classic performances.
